Our Story - Abundant Landscapes LLC, based in Ashland, Wisconsin, is an ecological landscape design company specializing in whole systems design and implementation for homesteads, farms, and residential yards. We produce scaled layout drawings ranging from simple planting plans to drawing sets detailing water harvesting, earthworks and grading, access, hardscapes, planting and more. For nearly two decades, it's founder and lead designer Derek Downey has used permaculture principles to design and build ecological landscapes that produce food, medicine, and more. Derek ties together his background in engineering, farming, beekeeping, gardening, and landscaping, along with his extensive education in permaculture, to design and build landscapes and homesteads that produce an abundance. He and his family reside near the shores of Lake Superior where he grows vegetables, berries, eggs, herbs, mushrooms, and honey, and forages from the abundance of the Northwoods.
